What Illuminator Demonstrates

Boy on Carbon Cycle powering ordinary lamp

Illuminator enables the viewer to see that 5 energy saving lamps can be lit for the same amount of energy (or even slightly less) than that used to light an ordinary lamp of equivalent light output wattage. The ordinary lamp is 60 Watts and the energy saving lamps are 11 Watts each.

In other words, Illuminator demonstrates that an 'energy saving' lamp is 5 times less expensive to run when compared to the cost of running an 'ordinary' lamp.

The display board on Illuminator explains the above and that using 'energy saving' lamps in place of 'ordinary lamps' also results in roughly 5 times less carbon dioxide, a potent greenhouse gas, being released into our atmosphere from fossil fuel powered electricity generating stations and, that this helps to minimise global warming and climate change.

How it works

Illuminator has a control and indicator panel on which there are two meters indicating the comparative energy consumption between the energy saving lamps and the ordinary lamp. There is a 'start' press-button and when pressed by the viewer Illminator automatically switches on and off all the lamps in a set sequence to enable the comparison to be indicated by the two meters. One cycle of the control programme takes less than 30 seconds.

Illuminator operating modes:

Illuminator Control Panel

Illuminator has four modes of operation: Auto, Manual, Beacon and Lamp:

  • Auto: In this mode, Illuminator cycles round its programme automatically and continuously until the 'Reset' button is pressed after which it returns to the 'Manual' mode. This is a very visually active mode and helps attract visitors especially at less busy events.

  • Manual Mode: In this mode, Illuminator requires to be initiated by a viewer by pressing the 'Start' button. This is the normal mode of operation.

  • Beacon: In this mode, Illuminator automatically and continuously flashes the ordinary lamp briefly every few seconds until the 'Reset' button is pressed after which it returns to the 'Manual' mode. This is a moderately visually active mode and can help attract visitors at less busy events.

  • Lamp: In this mode, Illuminator acts like a standard lamp with just one energy saving lamp lit permanently until the 'Reset' button is pressed after which it returns to the 'Manual' mode. This mode is useful as a more subtle visitor attractor and also during power cuts!
